What They Say
Bloomberg reports that Apple wants to push on with its own processors and is developing new chips that are intended to significantly outperform high end Intel-based systems. The new chips, expected in the spring and autumn next year, are planned for higher versions of the MacBook Pro, desktops and a new Mac Pro workstation.
The company said it expects to finish the transition away from Intel and to its own silicon in 2022.
What We Think
I have already written that I think the M1 could be truly disruptive (Apple May be Genuinely Disruptive. Again) Bloomberg said that Apple accounts for less than 10% of Intel’s revenues, but it will be a big blow to the pride and market position of ‘ChipZilla’ Intel if Apple can execute as it expects. The only thing that might derail a lot of expansion is a potential lack of software support, but I doubt that is a big issue, in these cloud-based days. Apple’s claim that all apps work using the ‘Rosetta’ 2 translation layer technology is being disputed in some quarters, but enough probably do work. (BR)
