Apple Patents Method to Raise AMOLED Display Brightness

Apple has been granted several new patents, but those that we are interested in relate to AMOLED displays – specifically, raising the performance of these devices.

A top-emission AMOLED uses a top electrode with reduced resistance; the emitted light is transmitted directly through the top of the display using this electrode. However, the resistance level can be higher than desired in certain large-sized displays, having a negative affect on the brightness and uniformity.

Apple’s patent relates to AMOLED displays in both the Macbook and iPhoneApple’s patent describes several ways to reduce this resistance level. For example, adding a metal frame between the electrode and an insulating layer. This frame can be conductively coupled to the top electrode. The larger conductive area ‘may’ help to lower internal resistance. In addition, methods to produce such displays in fewer steps are detailed.
