What They Say
A semiconductor market analyst on the Seeking Alpha website has said that Apple is testing Diamond-like Coatings (DLC) as a possible enhancement to Gorilla Glass Victus (the 7th generation of Gorilla Glass, announced in July). The article points out that $14 billion has been spent on repairing screens since the launch of the iPhone. The analyst sets out an overview of suppliers of this kind of technology.
What We Think
On the one hand, when I see articles that say that Apple (or another tech giant) is investigating something, I usually think “It would be a surprise if they weren’t”. However, in this case, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Apple adopt this kind of technology somewhere in its product range. Remember all that activity around sapphire for device cover lenses? (No Sapphire on Apple iPhones? – published in 2014) That didn’t end well, but showed the degree of motivation that was driving a desire for better durability. (BR)
