What They Say
Apple told CNN Business that it is discontinuing the sale of the iMac Pro, once existing inventory is sold out. The product was released in 2017 (iMac Pro Supports up to 44 Million Pixels) and used what Apple called ‘a 27″ 5K display’ as its main display, and could support dual additional displays.
Apple is planning a new release of iMacs this year to replace its 21.5-inch and 27-inch models, Bloomberg reported in January.
What We Think
Excuse me for banging on about an old topic, but ‘5K’ displays have really been the most egregious example of terrible display specification marketing. Whenever I have asked those that sold this class of display (and I mean display PMs, marketing people and those that should know better) “how much bettter is it than 4K?”, I never got a good answer. For most buyers, a 5K display would appear from the name to be 25% better than a 4K. However, 4K displays are ’rounded up’ from 3840, while 5K is ’rounded down’ from 5120. While a ‘5K’ display has 14.745 megapixels, an UltraHD ‘4K’ monitor has 8,29 megapixels, so the 5K has 77% more pixels!!
I can’t imagine why customers didn’t think that they were getting such good value from the Pro (fx:sarcasm alert), although as it hasn’t had a significant update in over three years, it is bound to have fallen out of favour. (BR)
