Apple has Patented Several New HMD-related Technologies

What They Say

PatentlyApple reported that Apple has been granted a US patent for a system to cool head-mounted displays. The aim of the patent is to get over the problem that the lightweight materials often used in HMDs (e.g. plastics) tend to have less thermally conductive properties.

Separately, VRTimes has reported that Apple has a patent for self-cleaning glasses for AR, using vibration. The blog also reported that in January, the firm got a patent for including vision correction in smart glasses. (We had a link to another story in this field here What Bob Saw on the Net 08/06/2020)

What We Think

As we have often reported, heat is a real challenge for HMDs and it’s going to take more than ‘a quick turn around Moore’s Law’ to fix.

On the cleaning glasses idea, the use of vibration to dislodge dust is not new, I have seen this in my digital cameras with removable lenses for some years. (BR)
