Apple has been find €10 million in Italy for overstating its claims about waterproofing products. The company made claims about the depth and time that products would work, but these were based on very idealised tests in laboratory conditions and do not reflect what a user would experience.
What We Think
European authorities are much tougher than in the US on advertising claims. The article is interesting in its description of the amount of control of the angle etc of the device as it was immersed to give a rating.The article discusses other examples of this kind of ‘cheating’. I once heard of a projection company that quoted contrast based on disconnecting the display devices between white and black, so the display industry is not without history in this area! And, of course, Samsung got into trouble for spoofing power saving tests a while ago. (BR)
