Apple Faces $862m Fine

Apple

The University of Wisconsin has successfully sued Apple for $862 million, for unlicensed use of its microchip patents in some iPhones and iPads. The 1998 patent deals with a method to improve microchip efficiency, the BBC reports.

The case relates to the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus – a separate lawsuit has been filed against the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

Intel was sued over the same patent in 2008; a case that was settled out of court, in the University’s favour. Apple may need to pay more than the $862 million, if the court decides that it was wilfully infringing the patent. The University has said that it offered to license the patent to Apple at an earlier date.
