What They Say
Apple wants the OLEDs that are expected to be used on its OLED iPads in around 2024 to use a very thin (0.2mm) glass substrate rather than a fully flexible substrate according to the Elec. The glass would be used in conjunction with thin film encapsulation (TFE) to avoid visible ‘crumpling’ artefacts that are said to be a concern on larger (10″+) fully flexible OLEDs that may be caused by the laser lift off process when the flexible display is taken off the glass substrate used in manufacture.
What We Think
This looks like a good way of maintaining quality, while reducing the thickness of the overall display. The Elec said that the glass was 2mm thick, but we knew what they meant! (BR)
