What They Say
Counterpoint Research put out some interesting data on smartphone sales revenues by model in Q1 2021 and highlighted that Apple’s iPhone Series 12 took one third of the market, while the top ten models by revenue took 46% of all global smartphone revenues, while on a volume basis, the top 10 only take 21% of volume. This shows the importance of being in the premium segment. Counterpoint defines the premium segment as over $400 and said that the segment took 65% of global revenues in Q1.
Although the top three models by volume were the iPhone 12, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 11 was fourth as it remains a popular choice for users looking for lower-cost Apple devices and in markets like India where 5G services are still elusive.
Note, there were only three brands represented in each of the top ten charts, with only four overall, Apple, Samsung, Redmi (Xiaomi’s lower cost sub-brand) which does well in China and India) and Huawei.
The Samsung A12. A21S and A31 sold volume in MEA, India and LATAM markets and took 28% of the $150 to $250 segment globally.
What We Think
Over the years, I’ve talked a lot about how well Apple does with just a few models and this data shows how this strategy can really pay off if the offer is attractive enough. (BR)
