Apple and Ericsson have been in legal battles over Apple’s use of Ericsson’s technologies in its iPhone and iPad devices for around three years now – and have finally reached an agreement.
A seven-year agreement has been signed, under which Apple will pay to use the mobile technology on which 2G and 4G connectivity is based. They will also work together on 5G services. Apple will make an initial payment and then pay royalties. Apple’s previous licensing deal with Ericsson ran out in January 2015 (Ericsson Sues Apple over Patent Licensing).
Although terms were not disclosed, Ericsson said that overall IP revenues in 2015 were estimated to be between SEK13 billion ($1.5 billion) and SEK14 billion ($1.7 billion) – including the extra revenue from Apple.
