Apple Adopts HEVC Across the Range

Apple

Apple said at its developer’s conference that it would update the tvOS used on the Apple TV and will include new features including support for the HEVC codec, on Apple TVs from version 4. Apple has adopted HEVC as its core video codec for the future and it will be supported in iOS and macOS, although the capbailities, such as the supported bit depth, will depend on the age of the processor. The operating systems will also have to be brought up to iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. For some older hardware, software codecs will be supplied in these OSes.
