What They Say
Apple held an event yesterday in which it announced new 14.2″ and 16.2″ MacBook Pro models with smaller bezels and based on its own M1 Pro and M1 Max processors which are said to be 70% faster than the M1 with graphics up to 4X faster. As widely rumoured, the ‘Touch Bar’ is gone. The M1 Pro systems support dual external displays while the M1 Max can support three Pro Display XDRs and an UltraHD TV. Both systems have an HDMI port as well as multiple Thunderbolt 4 ports) and the in-built displays feature ‘Liquid Retina XDR’ technology and ProMotion support up to 120Hz.
Brightness on the display is 1,000cd/m² (sustained) and 1,600cd/m² peak with 10,000 miniLEDs in the backlights. Resolutions are 3456 x 2234 and 3024 x 1964 (254ppi for both) and aspect ratio is close to 3:2. Colour support is, as usual with Apple devices, DCI-P3.
The bezels have shrunk on the unit, which means no space for a camera so the systems have a ‘notch’ and Apple has an automatic mode to reduce the effective display height for apps that are trying to use the camera notch area.
What We Think
Hmmm, these look like very desirable units. I’m looking forward to seeing in-depth reviews of the displays. (BR)
