What They Say
Market researcher Dataxis released its estimates of console sales by Sony and Microsoft in the ‘console wars’, with the result (17 million for Sony, 12 million for Microsoft) suggesting that Sony is pulling ahead of its US rival. The firm also said that the PlayStation 5 also overtook its competitor in two historical Xbox territories: North America and Australia/New Zealand.
The firms are in a ‘war for content’ with Microsoft acquiring Blizzard, known for Diablo, Call of Duty as well as mobile Candy Crush Saga. Sony on the other hand, Sony officially launched the 2018 Deep Rock Galactic on PlayStation at the beginning of the year, which until now had been a PC and Xbox exclusivity. Since the launch, the number of players has more than doubled to 10 million.
Although both fimrs are developing their subscription-based streaming and cloud gaming services, Dataxis doesn’t believe that the firms will move away from hardware and believes both are already working on their next generation consoles.
What We Think
The chart clearly shows Sony being pulled back towards Microsoft over recent years, although the firm has consistently been ahead of the installed base of the US firm. (BR)
