Amazon Upgrades Paperwhite Kindle

What They Say

Amazon has updated the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite eReader to Version 5. It has a larger 6.8″ display (1430 x 1080 – 300ppi) with narrower bezels, and has more LEDs (up to 17 from 5) to give 10% more brightness (and a ‘warm light option) and longer battery life. It has a new processor for 20% faster page turns. It supports Qi wireless charging and has an IPx8 rating. There is 8GB storage on the regular version $140) and 32GB on the Signature Edition ($190) and they will be available at the end of October. The versions without advertising cost more. There is no cellular option and wireless is via Wi-Fi only.

What We Think

I confess to barely having used my old Kindle for years. Every now and again, I charge it up to see if it works, but with a biggish display on my smartphone, I find that works well enough. I guess if I read avidly on the beach or elsewhere outside, I might upgrade, but that’s unlikely for now. Still, it’s good to see the Kindle line continuing. There was a time when the long battery life alone made a Kindle useful on long flights but USB charging on flights has reduced the need for that. (BR)
