What They Say
Reinforcing the message from DSCC about SDC’s OLED dominance (Q3’22 Flat Panel Display Financials Highlight Wide Gap Between LCD and OLED) The Elec reported that SDC expects to supply 70% of the OLEDs used in the iPhone 14 series. SDC expects to supply mid-80 million out of 120 million total with LGD making around mid-20 million and BOE up to 6 million. More than 60 million from SDC will be for the Pro and Pro Max models which use LTPO.
Samsung Display supplies OLED panels for all four models; LG Display supplies LTPS for the regular 6.1-inch model and LTPO for the 6.7-inch Pro Max model. BOE only supplies LTPS for the 6.1-inch regular iPhone.
Although LGD had started to ship LTPO (LG Display starts to ship LTPO AMOLED displays to Apple), the Elec reports that LGD has ‘faced problems in production’.
What We Think
SDC has had some luck in that it is strongest as a supplier in the models that are selling best. However, the success is also a result of the firm’s strong LTPO technology. Apple must really, really hate having to make SDC stronger! (BR)
