What They Say
Reuters reported that in a ‘townhall meeting’ with staff, Meta said that it would stop developing smart displays (the Portal product range) and smartwatches and that half the 11,000 positions it eliminated were in technology. The firm also said it would set up a new division, Family Foundations to focus on ‘tough engineering problems’ and combing a voice and video calling unit.
Meta had already decided to focus Portal on the B2B business (Meta to Drop Project Nazare AR Glasses Plan) but decided
“It was just going to take so long, and take so much investment to get into the enterprise segment”
No smartwatches had been launched and the development unit will focus on AR glasses and the firm said that half of the total investment in Reality Labs was going to augmented reality.
What We Think
I wasn’t convinced by the plan to move portal to B2B customers. Most business users already have a system that can run video conferencing already. (BR)
