Samsung Display planning to apply transparent polyimide substrate to foldable OLED panel

What They Say

The Elec reports that Samsung Display Corp (SDC) will use a very transparent polyimide substrate for its foldable OLED panels from 2024 to boost the transmission of light for under display cameras (UDCs). The material will replace the current material which is ‘yellowish’. Using the material will mean that the firm can have higher ppi for the display in the camera area (which is reduced from 374ppi to 187ppi on the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The Elec said that current polyimide substrates are made by putting the liquid varnish on a glass substrate. The varnish is hardened to solid form through hit and the glass substrate is cut off using a laser. The new material may be less durable than current materials and more expensive, so SDC may have to find a solution.

What We Think

It’s probably time that I updated my knowledge on the state of play in UDCs. (OTI Highlights the Challenge for Under-Display Cameras)  (BR)
