What They Say
At Cedia in the US (the show for home cinema and high end TV), Samsung introduced its latest 98″ diagonal QN100B Neo QLED (miniLED) TV with an amazing peak brightness of 5,000 cd/m². Despite the high brightness, the set is said to be under 20mm thick. Pricing is going to be around $34,000 according to What HiFi
What We Think
It’s disappointing that this set is, like the LG 97″ OLED, just a 4K set. This is the kind of size where 8K is really useful and important. It’s hard to think why you would need such luminance from a consumer set although it should have plenty of impact. I would expect most units to end up in commercial environments.
It seems to me that at 5,000 nits of output, the eye is likely to react and reduce its sensitivity. I have certainly heard that in Hollywood, those with ‘golden eyes’ dislike this high level of output as it can affect their vision for grading at lower luminance for a significant period of time.
Still, I guess Samsung could say that such a high level of luminance should enable really good performance even on 4,000 nit graded content when it is shown in a brighter viewing environment. (BR)
