What They Say
DSCC released the latest update of its Advanced TV Display cost report and published an extract on its blog. It pointed out that for OLED, the total costs for manufacture by LG in Korea and China are comparable, as Korea has a fully depreciated production line, but China has lower personnel, indirect and SG&A costs which means lower cash cost.
DSCC expects LGD to introduce a 45″ WQHD (21.5:9) panel for the gaming monitor market where it should do well. It also suggests that LGD is looking at additional monitor sizes ‘like 27”, 31”, 42”’.
The report also has a forecast for Inkjet printed (IJP) OLED in China and DSCC expects TCL/CSOT to be in production in 2024. There is a cost comparison on the blog that shows similar cost for WOLED and RGB IJP in 2025, but advantages for OLED after that.
Samsung’s QD-OLED costs should come down from their high levels at the moment as yields improve (DSCC estimates at 70% for 55″ and 65″ panels).
Looking at miniLED LCD vs WOLED, there is an interesting chart of costs for 75″/77″ panels and that shows an advantage for miniLED in 2022 even with a shift to 8K.
What We Think
DSCC estimates that miniLED and 8K each add around 50% to the panel cost for LCDs. (BR)
