What They Say

We reported on a blog post by TM Roh of Samsung’s mobile business last week (Samsung Confirms August 10th for Galaxy Unpacked), but we missed the point that the firm said that ‘almost 10 million’ foldable smartphones shipped worldwide in 2021. That number is a bit higher than estimates by DSCC (Foldable Smartphones Continued to Surge in Q1’22, Strong Growth Expected in 2022) and by IDC at 7.1 million

What We Think

In terms of the overall market for smartphones, this level of difference is ‘a rounding error’. However, it’s good to see folding increasing. If the Samsung number is correct, then the revenues from the folding segment are higher and that makes the segment even more attractive to Apple and others. Separately, Lenovo’s Motorola brand said that it would announce its new Razr 3/Razr 2022 on August the 2nd, a week before the Samsung launch. It will also launch the Edge X30 Pro/Edge 30 Ulta handsets. There are more details here (BR)
