Samsung Looks at Glare and the Editor Glares…

What They Say

Samsung Electronics published an article about glare and highlighted the different ways that the word is used. It highlights that the firm’s ViewFinity S8 monitor is the first to be certified as ‘Glare Free’ monitor UL (Underwriters Laboratories). The monitor is described as having a ‘Matte display’.

What We Think

I was going to say that Samsung’s marketing people seem to have confused the terms “Matt” and “Matte”, but in checking (we do these things!), I find that the US uses matte when British English would use matte. However, I was disappointed that there is no useful technical detail in the article that explains who the glare is reduced. I assume that it is based on micro-patterning and is, broadly, the kind of thing first done in the consumer market by Sharp with its ‘moth-eye’ technology. (Reflections on Display Week) The firm first used the ‘Matte Display’ term, I think, for its 2022 Frame TV. (BR)
