What They Say
UploadVR got its sticky fingers on a Pico Neo 3 headset and reviewed it. It points out that from a display point of view, the headset is the same as the Quest 2 with 1832 x 1920 per eye resolution and 90/120Hz operation. The headset can run a lot of Quest 2 content, but not some big exclusives and the reviewer said that:
Pico is really going to have to double down on investment to make this library much more compelling
The headset’s big advantage over the Quest 2 is a USB-C to DisplayPort cable that can be used to connect to a PC and that connection provides much better clarity than compressed wireless signals. The SteamVR integration is said to work well.
What We Think
The reviewer quite likes the hardware, but doesn’t recommend the headset because of the messages from Pico that the headset will be superseded in a year or so. I’m old enough to have been in the PC business when the ‘Osborne effect’ was demonstrated. Early luggable PC maker, Osborne, announced the Osborne 2 before it was ready. People stopped buying the Osborne 1 and the firm ran out of money before the 2 could be launched. That was in 1984, so nearly 40 years ago. You might have thought that this topic was made clear these days in High Tech marketing 101, but maybe “Those that don’t learn the lessons of history….”. (BR)
