What They Say
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the next version of iOS (16) will include functions to enhance the lock screen by adding support for ‘widget-like capabilities’. It will also have support for an always-on lock screen, with the update rate being changeable to allow very low frequency updates. That mode will probably only be on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
He also reports that iOS 16 may have better support for windowing.
On the hardware side, he thinks that ‘if there’s any hardware at WWDC’, it will be the next MacBook Air with M2 chips. “developers say that Apple employees are increasingly using next-generation MacBook Airs with their apps”.
What We Think
Ross Young suggested at Display Week that the 14 Pro and Pro Max would use LTPO and that is where the low refresh rates on a lock screen would be most useful to save power. Then again, as Apple is getting closer to a foldable product, it may want to implement features that might work well on a dual display device.
Separately, there has been much excitement that Apple has a new trademark ‘RealityOS’ that includes coverage of ‘wearable computer hardware’. (BR)
