Samsung Reports Breakthrough on Blue Phosphorescent OLED Lifetime

What They Say

DSCC published a blog (registration required) that dug into information from the Display Week Symposium from Samsung Display that describes “Exceptionally Stable Blue Phosphorescent OLEDs”. (paper 40.2). The blog said that

“In improving efficiency and reducing power consumption, a control of out-coupling has been the greatest contributor to efficiency improvement. Samsung has developed platinum complexes to improve decay rate. A fast radiative decay rate leads to higher efficiency and longer lifetime. The platinum complex has also shown to produce a narrower emission spectrum”

Samsung improved both the host and dopant materials as detailed on the slide below.

After more optimization trials, Samsung was able to achieve a device performance with an External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) of 23.4% and a LT70 lifetime of more than 1000 hours, an improvement of more than 10x compared to prior materials, while maintaining a color point with CIEy < 0.2

Work continues to get a deeper blue and Samsung is also working on TADF technologies.

What We Think

DSCC speculates that although the paper doesn’t mention UDC, the work is likely to have been done with the firm. As DSCC speculates, if there is joint IP between Samsung and UDC, there could be restrictions on who has access to it, or Samsung may have an exclusivity period. (BR)
