What They Say
An article in Business Korea last week, quoting data from Omdia, pointed out that Samsung shipped more smartphones with LCDs than with OLEDs in 2021. Samsung Electronics shipped 135.8 million LCD smartphones and 135.1 million OLED smartphones in 2021 as LCD smartphone shipments grew by about 41% while OLED model shipments slid by about 15%. That actually helped Samsung’s profitability the article said. It said that the proportion of LCD smartphones in the ?100,000 to ?500,000 ($80-$400) range climbed to 68.7%.
What We Think
Part of the reason that I was late reporting this article is that when I looked at it, the numbers for revenues for smartphones looked wrong. It quoted values in Won, but they looked more to me like the values for a quarter than for the year. I’m glad I checked against the data below from Counterpoint, below. (the other reason was that I mis-filed it!)
Still, the article was a good reminder that, for now, the rate of growth of OLED penetration in smartphones is slowing down. I can tell it’s heading towards Display Week, I’m beginning to need a ‘top-up’ on industry dynamics data! (BR)
