Samsung Freestyle is a TV projector, light and smart speaker

What They Say

Samsung launched a new DLP projector that has a spotlight shape – or like a smart speaker (which it can also act as). The device can be run from external batteries (a battery base is availabl) or USB-PD that can support 50W/20V. It can also be connected directly to a standard E26 light socket. Features include auto focus, level and keystone adjustment.

The projector is rated for images up to 100″ and has auto colour correction for off-white walls. It can also connect to a Samsung TV via Wi-Fi to allow the showing of content from the TV and there is integrated support for major streaming sources including Samsung TV Plus. There is an ‘ambient mode’ that shows backgrounds or photos. Audio support is via Alexa or Bixby.

Resolution is FullHD and it weighs 0.83kg. It is available for pre-order from today at $899 in the US.

We couldn’t see the output brightness on the Samsung website, but have seen it reported as 522 lumens with 300:1 native contrast. Projector Central had an interesting review that highlights that the unit has an interesting smartphone-based calibration system and can be accurately calibrated.

What We Think

Interestingly, the Samsung UK website has an option to ‘choose your size’ which might suggest that there is another bigger (or smaller) version might be in the works.

This product reminds me of the Panasonic ‘Space Player’ designed to look like lighting, but aimed at commercial applications including retail, museums and restaurants. Epson also had the ‘Lightscene’. (BR)
