What They Say
BlackBerry announced that it would discontinue its service on its classic, non-Android phones. At one time the firm had 20% of the global smartphone market with sales of more than 50 million per year. However, the arrival of the iPhone and the shift to large touch screens hit it hard and in 2016, it stopped making its own devices and focused on software.
In the three fiscal quarters to the end of November, BlackBerry had $533 million in revenue, but this was down from $683 million in the first three quarters of 2020. The firm saw a loss of $132 million for that period, but down from a loss of $789 million last year after impairment of goodwill.
What We Think
I really liked my Nokia with a physical keyboard and when I was unable to replace it, I was disappointed, but the bigger display was great and pretty soon I didn’t miss it. We first reported on the ‘Research in Motion’ Blackberry wearable computer. It had a 10MHz 386 processor and 2MB of storage. It cost $399. (BR)
