Samsung Pauses Plans for 70-80″ microLED TVs

What They Say

The Elec reports that Samsung Electronics has taken a planned 70″-80″ microLED out of its range of TVs for 2022, leaving an 89″, a 101″ and a 114″ set in the plans. The sets will be based on glass modules with LTPS drivers, the Elec said.

What We Think

It makes sense to focus attention on the sizes of LED where LCD and OLED really can’t compete and that is in the sizes of around 100″ and above. Although LED would have advantages in high ambient lighting, it’s hard to imagine buyers that think that Samsung’s current 8K QLED sets are ‘just not good enough’ and want to spend a lot more to get a microLED, especially one with lower resolution as a microLED of 70″ to 80″ would have been UltraHD as it would have a pitch of around 0.5mm.

As we have said for a long time, 8K at a reasonable price is going to be a challenge for microLED as costs for LEDs are, broadly, proportional to the number of pixels, while as David Barnes used to say, for LCD makers (again broadly), “The pixels are free”. (BR)
