What They Say
At its Developer conference, Samsung said that it is developing a new cloud gaming platform for its Tizen-based smartTVs. The user base is now 200 million sets, the firm said. There were few details released.
What We Think
The platform will join GeForce Now, PlayStation Now, XBox Game Pas and Google Stadia. Amazon is also developing its Luna+ cloud gaming service. I guess that CES 2022 might see more details of titles and partners for the new service.
The whole idea of cloud-based gaming is an old one, at least going back to 2009, and we reported in 2012 that Samsung was developing a service for its higher end TVs with Gaikai. Gaikai eventually was subsumed into PlayStation Now. However, it really, really needs low latency broadband and 5G could be a key enabler for connectivity in games. To fully exploit that, the TV needs to connect via 5G and that might happen in time. The GSMA published that the key latency for real time gaming is around 10ms and that’s the kind of latency I see on my home network via cable. (BR)
