What They Say
Following on the adoption of miniLED in Apples latest high end MacBooks, (Apple Adds Expected New MacBook Pro Models) DSCC’s Ross Young has tweeted that
The 27″ MiniLED screen is going in an iMac in Q1’22, not an external monitor. May see a monitor later. Still 24Hz – 120Hz variable refresh.
What We Think
It’s intriguing that Apple is going so strongly for miniLED LCD rather than OLED. Still, the firm must have invested a lot in the engineering and that engineering can add value to its products in a way that it really can’t, at the moment, for OLED. Thinking about that makes me wonder if a strategic relationship on OLED with LG Display might be a possibility in the future, in the same way that Apple has unique products from Corning because of its contribution to R&D. That would have been especially difficult while LG was a competitor in smartphones. Of course, LG is a competitor in other areas such as notebooks, but is not a significant one.
I’m (almost) tempted to go to an Apple Store and have a play with one of the new MacBooks, but I think I’d have to leave my credit card at home. I might get sucked into the Apple force field (again – my Apple ][ is still in the loft upstairs!) 🙂 (BR)
