What They Say
Skyworth held a virtual event to launch its latest TVs. The company gave us a pre-briefing and told us that it would be adding to its facilities outside China by starting a factory in Mexico to support its US business. The firm said that it has seen a 68% increase in overseas sales in the first half of 2021 and ‘good growth’ in North America.
The company highlighted its S82 UltraHD OLED TV (from the Supreme family) which has DCI-P3 coverage and that is now said to be the ‘most accurate colour’ in the TV industry. The Delta E figure overall is now down to 0.86, when it was previously 0.86 and the individual colours have errors of 1.3 (blue), 1.4 (green) and 1.5 (red). The set can automatically select a colour space, but also has settings for Rec. 709, Rec. 2020 and DCI-P3. Features include HDMI 2.1 with full 48Gbps support and it’s available in 55″ and 65″.
Of particular interest on the S82 is that the set uses a modified panel from LG. It includes what Skyworth calls its ‘OBM Slim’ technology. The firm uses a ‘new metal composite’ material that removes one layer compared to an OLED with a heat sink and outer layer and that means a thickness of just 3.9mm. It’s created by ‘unibody stamping’. Meanwhile, the company said, there is a 25% increase in heat dissipation and the average temperature is lowered by 5°C. The peak brightness is 1,000cd/m² and the set can support up to 120Hz for gaming with VRR from 49 to 120Hz. Pricing in China is around $2165 for the 55″ and $3866 for the 65″).
The Q72 is a miniLED UltraHD LCD TV in the ‘Quality’ series and available in 75″ and 86″. The backlight uses a chip-on-glass active matrix architecture from a collaboration with BOE. It uses 20,736 LEDs in 2,304 zones. Peak brightness is up to 1,500 cd/m². WCG is provided using a QDED system and coverage is 115% of DCI-P3 with a Delta E of 1. Dolby Vision is supported and refresh up to 120Hz. It’s a dual box system, with inputs in a separate unit. It will be initially made available in China (75″ at around $4,640, 86″ at $7,733) and later elsewhere.
What We Think
Skyworth clearly wants to challenge TCL for the top technology position among the Chinese TV brands. (BR)
