Samsung Display to use vertical deposition for Gen 8.5 IT OLED panels

What They Say

The Elec reports that Samsung is working with Ulvac of Japan to develop vertical deposition technology for the manufacture of IT application OLEDs on G8.5 substrate sizes. It reports that Ulvac has a research space near Samsung Display to work on the technology.

The blog reports that Applied Materials supplied vertical deposition equipment to Sharp to make OLEDs for the Apple Watch, but the capacity was just 2,000 G6 substrates per month.

What We Think

The challenge with fine metal masks used for material deposition is sag because of the self-weight of the mask. The Elec said that vertical deposition requires higher temperatures, which can adversely affect the organic materials.

This is not a new topic. I looked back in my database and found a reference to the idea in a talk by Applied Films from SID in 2002! Ulvac has been working on it at G6 for some time. (BR)
