Tencent of China said that its transcoding and media processing apps can support the H266/VVC codec which is expected to reduce file sizes by a further 50% compared to H.265/HEVC. The firm said that it had been an active participant in the setting of H.266/VVC standard, with over 100 technical proposals adopted by the expert team.

What We Think
VVC is really aimed at 4K and above as well as HDR and 360° video. When compressing lower resolutions such as 1080P, AV1 can actually be more efficient. Tencent had a bad week on the stock markets after a report in the Xinhua News Agency criticised the company and the culture of gaming with youngsters. At one point its stock price was down 11% although it rose to be only 6% down. Bloomberg reported that the firm lost $170 billion in market value in July as the Chinese authorities cracked down on technology companies. BR)
