What They Say
In an unusual move, some labour union workers at Samsung Display have walked out after failing to agree a pay rise with management at the Asan plant in Korea. The group, which is said by Business Korea to have around 10% of the firm’s staff as members, has yet to decide on full strike action. The union is asking for 6.8% increase compared to an offer of 4.5% in wages.
It is the first action since Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong said that he would change the “no labor union” policy in May last year.
Digitimes reported that any action might only affect the firm’s LCD production lines.
What We Think
Workers on the LCD lines may well feel that the high pricing and profits are a chance for more pay, given the limited expected lifetime for the firm’s LCD production facilities. (BR)
