What They Say
Planar launched a new DirectLight Ultra Series of small pixel pitch LEDs with pitches of 0.6, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.2mm. The company said that for three of the series, LEDs are smaller than ‘standard LEDs’ and with up to three times the brightness, while being more efficient. The smaller pitches are claimed as microLEDs and are set in a black surround for maximum contrast. The cabinets are 23.6” x 13.3” x 2.7” (600 x 337.5 x 69 mm)
The features of the 0.625mm pitch are a 4-in-1 LED with common cathode driving and 1,000 cd/m² and 10,000:1 contrast. Refresh is 3840Hz. The 0.78125mm pitch version boosts output to 1,200 cd/m². The 0.9375 pitch version pushes up to 1,600 cd/m², The 1.25mm pitch switches to an SMD LED type and has 800 cd/m² of output, and contrast reduced to 7,000:1. All cabinets have power consumption of 140W.
The modules are claimed to have patent-pending self-adjusting module alignment technology designed to maintain alignment over time, combating issues such as vibration and thermal expansion.
As well as the modular system, the Planar DirectLight Ultra Complete series consists of monolithic UltraHD (108″, 136″ and 163″) and 8K (217″) units that are designed for easy installation. The complete package includes cables, spare modules, wall mounts as well as a video controller, remote power supply and remote control.
What We Think
No prices were released, but the ‘microLED’ versions are going to be expensive, I expect. Still Leyard/Planar displays always look very good. (BR)
