What They Say
IDTechEx’s Dr. Xiaoxi He held a 30 minute webinar to promote its new report on miniLED and microLED. She explained the differences between direct emission miniLEDs and miniLED backlit LCDs. Companies are partly developing miniLED because it helps to learn more about the technology and to acquire production skills for LED. She also highlighted that there has been a move in the areas of main concern in R&D as some issues have been getting clearer. She said that laser-enabled transfer is becoming a popular approach.
As we have reported before, Dr. He pointed out that the very small microLEDs needed for smartphone applications suffer from lower efficiency than larger LEDs, so combined with the fact that most smartphones are replaced fairly quickly and so the long life of LEDs is not a big advantage, may mean that OLED is not under real threat.
What We Think
This talk was something of a disappointment. Dr He spent quite a lot of time on the definitions and a general explanation of the technologies, but then rushed through some of the more interesting discussions towards the end of the talk. That meant that while I had hoped to use the talk as the basis for a Display Daily tomorrow, it really didn’t give enough new information or opinion to make that worthwhile. However, a couple of the slides that were briefly shown looked quite useful. (BR)
