GOB vs Non-GOB LEDs

What They Say

Sixteen-Nine.net got hold of a very nice image from Shisai Optoelectronics that shows the differences between encapsulated and non-encapsulated LED displays. Shisai calls the technology ‘Glue on Board’. The coating reduces the potential damage from handling.

What We Think

In UK slang, a gob is a mouth or even more unacctractively, a spit! Not very nice branding.

A couple of years ago, Peerless arranged a Christmas visit to Harrods in London and as well as a nice tea, we got the chance to look around the store with the display specialist to see how different displays were being used. There was an area of LEDs around one of the entrances and we heard that every couple of months it was necessary to repair the LEDs (which were not encapsulated) as passers-by often accidentally damaged them. It’s a real issue where people are close to displays. The displays were supplied in 2016 by Aoto, as we reported at the time.

The biggest downside of the encapsulation, apart from the cost, is that repair can only really be done on a modular basis. (BR)
