Renesas Factory Disturbed by Earthquake

What They Say

Nikkei reports that an earthquake in Fukushima, Japan, over the weekend has caused some disruption to a factory in Naka, Ibaraki, belonging to Renesas after power supplies were interrupted. The site is the main production facility for automotive chips.

Shin-Etsu Chemical, which makes silicon wafers said that it was quickly back in production.

The earthquake is likely to be after-shock to the big event in 2011.

What We Think

The disruption to Renesas production will only add to the stress on the supply chain for automotive semiconductors at the moment, which is continuing to cause production problems at Ford, Honda and Volkswagen, among others. It doesn’t look as though there will be any significant impact to the display supply chain. (BR)
