What They Say
In a Korean language media release on its website, Samsung Display said that it plans to make 90Hz OLEDs in March. The firm this is the optimum to avoid issues of power consumption and heat that can come from running higher than that. Samsung claims that the faster response time of OLEDs makes the image similar to a 120Hz LCD.
“As a result of testing the degree of screen drag with images moving at high speed, 90Hz OLED was 0.9mm, 120Hz high refresh rate LCD was 1mm, and rather, OLED was less.”
What We Think
Once you see an OLED on a notebook you want one. Samsung plans aggressive growth in its OLED for notebook sales this year. As this is the second time that the firm has promoted OLED into this application, with little success last time, we have to assume that the firm has worked out how to deal with the issues that caused the technology to fail to make an impact last time. The firm will be helped by the development of thinner and lighter gaming notebooks.
Over last weekend, I spent some time converting a stack of old notebooks to Chromebooks (using CloudReady) for distribution to some local families that are home schooling and didn’t have enough devices. I had forgotten how bulky and heavy the high end notebooks of ten years ago were! No wonder I occasionally have some shoulder issues after that! (BR)
