What They Say
Mac Rumors spotted a support document from Apple that acknowledges that some ‘ultrawide or super-ultrawide’ displays are not supported at full resolution on Macs with the new M1 chip. The document doesn’t say which resolutions are not supported. Apple said it would support the resolutions in a future Mac OS update.
There is a thread in the MacRumors forum on resolution topics.
What We Think
It’s surprising that Apple has missed out significant resolutions. However, the issue that is causing most irritation with users is that the M1 chip doesn’t currently support more than one display. No doubt, Apple will announce the support of an additional display as a big deal upgrade! Many years ago, I went to an Apple press event in Paris. During his talk, the legendary Steve Jobs said twice (to his cheering acolytes) that Macs could do things ‘that you can’t do on Windows’. I can’t remember what the features were (I think one was a good search function, but it was a long time ago!). Jobs was correct that you couldn’t do it without an app, but apps were available. I thought this made Jobs look either badly informed or mendacious, neither of which was a good result and I treated his statements after that with some caution. (BR)
