The World’s First Under-display Selfie Camera Isn’t Very Good

ZTE Axon Under display camera

What They Say

The Verge has got hold of the new ZTE Axon 20 5G and is the first phone to have its front-facing camera underneath the OLED. The smartphone has a 6.92″ 1080P OLED that the Verge found gave some colour-shifting when viewed off-axis.

The area where the camera is has lower pixel density than other parts of the screen, which the Verge found to be visible on light parts of the display.

Turning to the camera itself, the blog found that the performance was quite poor. The site pointed out that in the images below (worth a look on the site) were taken with the portrait mode and smoothing filters turned off.

What We Think

Hmmm… I’m not surprised that there is some compromise in the camera performance when it’s under the display, but it looks as though it will be a while before the technology goes in to smartphones from Apple and Samsung, unless they have some ‘magic sauce’ to avoid this level of compromise in image quality.
