Walmart filed two patents back in January, indicating that the retail chain is developing a new virtual reality shopping concept, where VR device owners can shop in a virtual Walmart from the comfort of their homes. They also detail the order fulfilment process, where products are picked, sorted and shipped using robot technology.
A separate patent application from December 2017 showed a concept for a VR shopping kiosk for installation in shopping malls, providing an out-of-home version of the experience shown in these latest applications. As with all patent filings, we don’t know if the retailer intends to fully develop any or all of these products.
