Much like computer systems are dominated by Windows and Mac OS, the smartphone battle for supremacy is also fought by two opposing forces, Android and iOS.
But which is better?
Well, it’s mostly a matter of personal preference. However, Blancco Technology Group has released its second-quarter 2017 State of Mobile Device Performance and Health report which has revealed some interesting facts around handset faults and operating system niggles.
Firstly, Android devices had a global failure rate of 25%, versus a 12% failure rate for Apple devices. In Q2 2017, Samsung achieved the dubious honour of highest overall failure rate with 61%, Blancco said, followed by LG with 11%, Sony at 6% and ZTE with 5%. The worst-performing Android device was the Samsung Galaxy S7 with a 6% failure rate, due to its range of performance issues and hardware problems, including well-documented incidents of exploding batteries.
However, in terms of app crashes, apps are reportedly five times more likely to crash on an iOS device than on Android.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 6, 6S and 7 Plus topped the list of iOS breakdowns, with the iPhone 6 having the highest failure rate of 26%. The 6S had a lower failure rate at 11%, while the 7 Plus performed significantly better with 7%.
The most common issues for Android users included battery charge and screen lock problems, while iOS users mostly reported faults with their screens and headphones.
When it comes to consumers hacking their mobile devices, the rooting of Android devices appears to be far more common (0.3%) than the jailbreaking of iOS devices (0.08%).
