Elemental Technologies, the leader in software-defined video solutions, today announced that Globo.com has selected its video processing solutions to power its new 4K video-on-demand (VOD) services. The agreement expands the broadcaster’s existing Elemental deployment with added video infrastructure to process streaming 4K content with HEVC compression.
Globo.com provides digital platforms and services for Brazil’s Grupo Globo, connecting online audiences to the diverse array of publishing, video and data properties Grupo Globo operates, including Globo TV’s broadcast networks, film studio Globo Filmes and over-the-top television service Globo Play. As part of its services, Globo.com provides VOD services for programs produced by more than 100 affiliates across Brazil.
Globo.com has used Elemental encoding solutions for more than five years, achieving consistently high quality video output. To address its growing market for 4K video, Globo.com sought to launch 4K VOD services as quickly as possible. “Our research told us a new 4K service would only win a market if it provided a new and engaging level of quality, unobtainable elsewhere,” said Igor Macaubas, product manager, online video platform for Globo.com. “Elemental demonstrated that it could extend its high level of quality to 4K workflows, quickly and easily meeting Globo.com’s stringent requirements for performance, interoperability and reliability while incorporating the powerful and complex HEVC codec.”
The new deployment adds new Elemental Server transcoders to the existing solution comprising Elemental Live, Elemental Server and Elemental Conductor products, with Elemental APIs simplifying integration with other systems, boosting workflow efficiency and supporting a rapid time-to-market for Globo.com’s new 4K service.
HEVC, the high-efficiency video codec, provides excellent compression ratios, making online delivery of 4K video a practical proposition. Elemental’s software-defined video approach allows HEVC encoding to be implemented in dedicated appliances, virtualized in a data center or hosted in the cloud, whether supporting real-time streaming or batch-processed file conversion.
“Consumer interest in 4K video is quite high thanks to new large-screen smart TVs; as a market leader, Globo.com recognizes this and has built its services accordingly,” said Dan Marshall, senior vice president, worldwide sales and service for Elemental. “Consumers want the highest quality content and HEVC over broadband is the best way to deliver it. Elemental has the tools – not just video processing and signal management but integration APIs – to build 4K video delivery systems quickly and cost-effectively.”
