UBI Research of Korea, which is specialising in OLED research, said that it expects new types of flexible OLEDs to be used in smartphones including full screen foldable and rollable. The company also confirms an expectation of smaller and smaller bezels around smartphone displays and the firm believes that this kind of display will take 17% of the OLED phone market next year, rising to 60% in 2020.
The company also said that it expects companies to start to test the market by releasing foldable phones using flexible OLEDs in 2017, with mass production starting to develop around 2019. By 2020, the number could be around 15 million handsets (well the company said 1.5 million, but at 2% of the market, which it also said 15 million looks correct!).
