Hyundai Mobis has signed a business cooperation agreement with German optical company Zeiss to develop a holographic windshield display for vehicles. The new technology uses the vehicle’s windshield as a large display, supposedly eliminating the need for traditional dashboard instruments such as instrument clusters and audio-visual navigation systems.
The windshield display is expected to become a next-generation technology with no current mass-production examples, in other words, nothing to see here right now. However, Hyundai Mobis and Zeiss plan to begin mass production as early as 2027.
Zeiss will contribute its expertise in holographic projection and micro-optical solutions, while Hyundai Mobis will oversee system development and supply the projector. Images are projected onto a thin film applied to the windshield. This film, less than 0.1 mm thick, applies photochemical properties to create various patterns when light enters, delivering the holographic images.
According to Omdia, the global market for holographic head-up displays is expected to reach 7 million units by 2030.
