E Ink’s Prism 3: The Fabric of Light

E Ink Prism 3 offers product designers to choose from eight (8) colors and combine them with patterns to create rich, dynamic surfaces. Additional benefits include:

Low energy consumption – E Ink’s renowned bistability means that power is only consumed when displays are updated; no power is consumed once the color is displayed

Priority on personalization – Designers have the option of combining intricate patterns and colors onto the surface to further enhance their products

Thin and durable – Rugged design provides a thin and light solution for surface displays
E Ink Prism 3 is the next generation E Ink Prism film, which bridges the gap between traditional static materials and digital technology with dynamically changing materials. Fully programmable, designers can now integrate endless materials with changeable colors and patterns. At CES 2023, BMW is using E Ink Prism 3 to create a multi-colored skin on their new i Vision DEE concept car, the first use of E Ink Prism 3 in automotive applications.

What We Think About The Display Material Evolution

it maybe hard for stalwart display industry professionals to warm to the idea that display technology is evolving to such an extent that a display has become almost like a configurable fabric or material that can be used for many things beyond the traditional moving image or digital signage. At CES 2023, BMW is showing a concept car, the i Vision DEE, with E Ink Prism 3 multi-colored skins. This may seem fanciful, but the notion that our environment can digitally transform through images and color based has appeal. There is no reason to assume that materials and costs won’t evolve to the point where it is feasible for DIY layering of displays onto any surface. In the meantime, E Ink is partnering on digital signage, showing sales growth, and mass producing eReaders.

Part of the Display Daily focus this year will be on exploring displays as an ubiquitous technology transcending the notion that you are going to be sitting or standing somewhere looking at one for any length of time. From AR to approaches like Prism 3, there is a lot to be excited about.
