Samsung opened two big new buildings in Sillicon Valley to act as a centre for innovation and support for its US clients. In San Jose, a new 10 storey (102,000m²) building for up to 2,500 staff will house Samsung Display, Samsung SDI and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, while in Mountain View, Samsung Electronics will house all its R&D organisations. The R&D centre (six storeys, 35,00 m²) will also include start-ups that Samsung has acquired such as mSpot and SmartThings as well as remaining elements of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. It is expected to employ up to 3,000 staff from 1,000 now.
