Forecast to grow 250% this year, smartwatch display shipments will reach a new record level in 2015, of 34 million units, says IHS. Demand for the Apple Watch will drive the increase.
The display industry is still evaluating the staying power of smartwatch demand, in order to avoid oversupply in the coming year. Smartwatch display shipments are expected to fall to 6.5 million units to Q4’15.
AMOLED panels will form the majority of shipments, says IHS, as these are used by both the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Gear. The Apple Watch is expected to form a massive 84% of AMOLED smartwatch panels shipped this year, and 49% of total smartwatch displays.
