Notebook ASPs are still falling, says Taiwan’s MIC, based on the rising share of low-cost models and low demand for touch notebooks and ultrabooks.
Notebook PC ASPs are forecast to fall to $453 this year, from $468 in 2013. The cannibalisation of the market by smartphones and tablets continues. The shift in applications to the cloud is also affecting notebook demand. MIC does not expect an upward swing in demand over the coming years.
In Asia in particular, the government’s ban on luxury goods is resulting in central and provincial governments cutting budgets for notebook purchases. In other countries in the region, low-cost smartphones and tablets have overtaken notebooks as primary computing devices. Notebooks are being promoted as ideal tools for students in some emerging markets, though, which helped to curb the decline last year.
